The City of Chandler was founded in 1912 and incorporated in 1920. It was named after Dr. Alexander John Chandler, the first veterinary surgeon in the Arizona Territory. He owned 18,000 acres of land and began creating a town known as Chandler Ranch that eventually became the City of Chandler. In 1913, the first golf resort in the state was established (Hotel San Marcos). Chandler is considered a bedroom community for Phoenix, even though many manufacturing plants for companies like Motorola and Intel are located here.
